Rotodynamic Pumps for Clean Water: Centrifugal, Mixed Flow, and Axial Flow
WanGuan Application Team
Match WanGuan horizontal centrifugal, mixed flow, and axial flow pumps to head, flow, and sump layout before you lock the motor size.
Start with specific speed, not with a catalog photo
Rotodynamic pumps add energy with a spinning impeller. The shape of that impeller follows specific speed: radial for higher head and modest flow, mixed flow in the middle, and axial for very large flow at low head. WanGuan’s clean-water group follows that split. The horizontal clean water centrifugal pump is the plant utility and irrigation workhorse. The single-head mixed flow pump sits on drainage and irrigation canals where the head is still meaningful but the volume is large. The horizontal axial flow pump is for flood, circulation, and transfer duties where the static lift is low and the pipe is wide.
Choosing the wrong family is the most common RFQ error we see. A centrifugal forced onto a 4 to 8 metre drainage duty runs far right on the curve, wastes power, and cavitates. An axial flow unit asked to push 40 metres of head will stall. Put the duty point on paper first, then pick the photograph that matches that physics.
Horizontal clean water centrifugal pump
The horizontal end-suction style centrifugal in the WanGuan catalog is intended for clean or lightly strained water: cooling circuits, fire tank fill, irrigation booster, and general plant transfer. Cast casing, closed or semi-open impeller depending on size, and a mechanical seal to atmosphere are the usual arrangement. It likes a flooded suction or a modest suction lift with a foot valve, and it wants the duty near best efficiency, not at shutoff and not off the end of the curve.
Tell us rated flow, total dynamic head, NPSH available, water temperature, and solids if any. Sand and fibres need a different impeller and wear-ring plan. For 50 hertz Europe and 60 hertz export motors, state voltage and starting method. If the system curve is flat, ask for a curve that shows power at runout so the motor is not undersized. Coupling alignment, baseplate grouting, and a suction strainer are part of a complete package even when the pump itself looks simple in the photo.
Single-head mixed flow pump
Mixed flow impellers discharge at an angle between radial and axial. That geometry moves more water than a same-size centrifugal at a lower head, which is why irrigation districts and municipal drainage stations specify it. The WanGuan single-head mixed flow pump is a compact unit for that band: high volume, moderate lift, clean or screened water.
Installation is sensitive to inlet swirl. A poorly designed sump will produce vibration that looks like a bearing fault. Share a sump sketch, minimum submergence, and whether the unit is horizontal or needs a discharge bend. Coatings and stainless fasteners help in slightly brackish water, but this is not a seawater pump unless the quotation says so. Ask for a Q-H curve and NPSH required at the rated point, and confirm the motor can start against a partially open discharge if the station uses a long rising main.
Horizontal axial flow pump
Axial flow pumps behave like a propeller in a tube. Head per stage is low; flow is very high. Use the WanGuan horizontal axial flow pump for circulation through cooling ponds, flood transfer, and aquaculture raceways. Throttling an axial flow pump with a discharge valve is a bad idea: the pump can enter a stall region and the power can rise. Control flow with speed, with a bypass, or by starting and stopping against a check valve that is sized for the slam load.
Give canal water level variation, maximum and minimum submergence, and debris risk. Screens belong upstream. Shaft sealing on a horizontal axial unit must live with a flooded barrel; confirm packing or mechanical seal and the flush plan. For export, crate the impeller separately if the diameter is large, and request a lifting drawing. Alignment of the tube and the motor frame is a site job that should be in the method statement, not left as a surprise for the electrician.
Shared buyer checks for all three
Water chemistry, ambient temperature, and motor protection class travel with every rotodynamic RFQ. Europe often asks for IE3 or better motors and CE machinery files; Middle East sites add 50 degrees Celsius ambient and IP55 as a minimum discussion point. WanGuan can supply English curves, outline drawings, and recommended spare parts. If you already have a pipe diameter and a target flow, send both: we would rather change an impeller diameter than ship a pump that runs in cavitation for its whole life.
These three units are clean-water machines. Oil, slurry, and vacuum duties belong to the positive displacement and specialty pages. Keep the families separate on the purchase order so inspection and spare parts stay coherent when the crates arrive.
