Isolation and Control Valves: Ball, Gate, Globe, Butterfly, and Electric Control
WanGuan Application Team
A practical map of WanGuan flanged ball, rising-stem gate, globe, lug butterfly, and electric control valves for plant isolation and modulating service.
On-off versus modulating is the first split
Isolation valves are either open or closed. Control valves spend their life somewhere in between. Mixing those jobs is how seats wire-draw and how actuators burn out. WanGuan’s isolation and control group covers four on-off patterns plus an electric modulating valve. Use this page to pick the pattern, then open the product photo that matches the body you need.
Pressure class, size, temperature, and medium come next. A water butterfly at PN16 is not a steam globe. Write the medium on the RFQ before you write the brand.
Flanged ball valve
Floating or trunnion ball valves give a quarter-turn shutoff with low torque and a clear piggable bore on full-port designs. The WanGuan flanged ball valve in the catalog is the default isolation valve for water, oils, and many process lines where you want a compact handle or a pneumatic actuator later. Seats are typically polymer; temperature and steam content must stay inside the seat limit.
Call out port (full or reduced), fire-safe need, antistatic stem, and whether you need a locking lever. For buried or offshore discussion, stem extensions and coating systems belong in the notes. Do not throttle a standard ball valve for months; the ball and seats are not a control trim. If you need modulation, skip to the electric control valve.
Rising stem gate valve
Gate valves are for full isolation on straight runs. The rising stem tells the operator the position from a distance, which EPCs still like on utility headers. Head loss when fully open is low because the wedge parks out of the flow. They are slow to operate and they do not like partial opening: the wedge chatters and the seat wires.
Specify wedge type, stem packing, flange face, and whether the water is clean. Gate valves on slurry or on frequent cycling are usually the wrong choice; a ball or butterfly will survive better. For steam, confirm pressure-temperature rating and whether a bypass is required for warm-up on large sizes.
Flanged globe valve
Globe valves can isolate, and they can also take a modest amount of throttling because the disc moves onto a seat in line with the stem. Pressure drop is higher than a gate. WanGuan’s flanged globe is the right conversation when you need a manual regulating valve on steam, condensate, or a cooling circuit that is adjusted a few times a shift rather than continuously by a positioner.
Flow direction matters; install the arrow correctly. Packing leaks show up first on thermal cycles, so ask for live-loaded packing if the line hunts in temperature. If the loop needs 4-20 mA control, do not buy a handwheel globe and add a makeshift actuator. Use the electric control valve with a proper trim.
Lug butterfly valve
Lug butterfly valves sit between flanges on a short face-to-face. Lugs allow one side of the line to be removed in many wafer-style systems, which maintenance teams value. They are the economical isolation choice on water, air, and some light process services in medium sizes. Disc material and seat elastomer must match the water treatment chemicals; chlorine residual has killed more EPDM seats than pressure ever did.
State lining, disc stainless grade, and whether you need a gearbox. Butterfly valves have a disc in the flow even when open, so they are not full bore. For dead-end service, confirm the lug rating. Do not use a resilient-seat butterfly as a steam control valve.
Electric control valve
The electric control valve is the modulating member of the family. An electric actuator drives a globe-style or similar trim to follow a control signal, usually 4-20 mA, with position feedback. Use it on temperature, pressure, and level loops where the plant has power but no instrument air, which is common on smaller export packages and on HVAC-process hybrids.
Send the process: medium, inlet and outlet pressure, temperature, required Cv, fail position on power loss, and enclosure. Supply voltage and control protocol must be explicit. Trim material and seat leakage class decide whether the valve can shut off or only throttle. WanGuan will not pretend a general service trim is a severe-service anti-cavitation stack; if the pressure drop is large and the liquid is flashing, say so on the first email.
Actuator sizing needs the actual delta P, not the flange rating. Include a strainer upstream and consider a manual isolation ball or butterfly on both sides so the control valve can be serviced. For CE-marked skids, the machinery file and the valve file are separate; request English IOM and wiring diagrams with the quote.
A short pairing list for buyers
Clean water header isolation: lug butterfly or flanged ball. Steam isolation: gate or globe at the correct class. Manual regulation: globe. Automatic modulation: electric control valve. Oil line isolation: ball valve with suitable seats. Write those pairings into the line list and the crates will match the P&ID instead of matching whoever shouted loudest in the meeting.
