Automatic Valves for Plant Protection: Safety, Pressure Reducing, Check, and Steam Trap
WanGuan Application Team
Size and specify WanGuan spring safety, flanged pressure reducing, spring check, and ball float steam trap valves so the line protects itself.
These valves operate without a PLC
Automatic control valves in the WanGuan catalog are not electric control loops. They respond to pressure, flow direction, or condensate level with a spring, a disc, or a float. That is why they belong on every steam and water package even when the plant is fully instrumented. If the controller fails, the safety valve still has to lift.
The four units below are specified as a set on many boiler rooms, heat exchangers, and process utilities: a safety relief valve on the protected vessel, a pressure reducing valve feeding a lower-pressure header, check valves on pump discharges, and steam traps on condensate legs.
Spring safety relief valve
A spring-loaded safety relief valve is a last-line device. Set pressure, overpressure allowance, and blowdown are not decorative numbers. The WanGuan spring safety relief valve in the photo is a conventional spring unit for steam, air, or water depending on the trim. It must see the vessel or piping it protects with a short, full-bore inlet and an unrestricted outlet.
Give set pressure, relieving temperature, required capacity in mass or volume units, and the fluid. Inlet and outlet sizes are often not the same. Do not put a block valve under a safety valve unless the code discussion for that site allows a three-way changeover with two valves. Ask for a set-pressure test record in English. After installation, gagging during hydrostatic test of the line must be planned and then removed. A safety valve that weeps needs a seat inspection, not a heavier spring.
Flanged pressure reducing valve
Pressure reducing valves hold a downstream setpoint while the upstream header moves around. The WanGuan flanged PRV is for steam or water utility drops: 10 bar in, 4 bar out is a typical conversation, not a promise for every size. Strainers belong immediately upstream. If the downstream volume is small, add a downstream relief valve sized for the PRV fail-open case.
State inlet pressure range, outlet setpoint, flow at minimum and maximum, and medium. Superheated steam, saturated steam, and water use different internals. Noise and erosion appear when the pressure ratio is large; a two-stage drop or a downstream silencer may be honest engineering rather than an upsell. Insulation and condensate drainage on steam PRV stations are part of the hook-up, not extras.
Spring check valve
Spring check valves stop reverse flow when a pump stops or when parallel pumps share a header. The spring helps the disc close before reverse velocity builds, which reduces slam compared with a simple swing check on some fast-stopping systems. Install them in the orientation the drawing shows; a spring check is not always happy lying on its side.
Give flow, closing speed concern, and whether the fluid is water, oil, or gas. Check valves are not isolation valves; they leak by design at a small class. If you need bubble-tight isolation, add a ball or gate. For sewage or solids, this clean-service spring check is the wrong pattern.
Ball float steam trap
A ball float steam trap discharges condensate as it arrives while holding steam in the coil or header. It is the default trap on heat exchangers with modulating loads because the float follows the condensate level continuously. WanGuan’s ball float trap in the catalog is that pattern: body, float, and a seat that must stay clean.
Dirt is the enemy. Fit a strainer, and fit a test valve if the site wants to see live condensate. Equalizing lines and installation relative to the drain point should follow the IOM. If the load is very light and the trap is oversized, the seat can wear from dribble. If the load is a sudden dump, confirm the orifice can pass the start-up condensate without waterlogging the exchanger. Freeze risk on outdoor European sites means tracing or a drain, not hope.
Station layout that survives inspection
A tidy steam station reads like this: isolation butterfly or globe, strainer, PRV, downstream gauge, safety valve on the low-pressure side, and traps on the drip legs with check valves where condensate lifts. Write that hook-up once and reuse it. WanGuan can quote the four automatic valves as a package with matching flanges so the gasket kit is not a scavenger hunt.
Send set pressures and orifice duties with the first inquiry. Photos of the existing room help, but numbers close the quotation. Documentation for export usually includes IOM, set-pressure sheet for the safety valve, and material list. Codes and CE modules vary by size and market; ask for what the destination inspector will stamp rather than a generic certificate pile.
